About Susanna

Instead of specializing in a single genre of writing, I enjoy the combo platter. My editorial experience includes fiction (novels and short stories in these categories: literary, historical, women’s, romance, and detective/mystery) and memoir (on topics such as spiritual quests, military combat, food and cooking, family narrative, and travel).

I also edit narrative nonfiction and am fearless about delving into a wide range of subject matter. I’ve worked on books about art, history, literature, music, psychology, and cinema, along with biography and poetry.

Testimonials

My clients include traditionally published authors, indie authors, emerging writers, and publishing houses. Here is what people say about my work:

Susanna Brougham, a deeply experienced line and developmental editor, has delivered expert editing to many of the most complex and important books on my list, including Megan Marshall’s Pulitzer Prize–winning MARGARET FULLER. Many times, I’ve asked that Susanna be put on the case. She is undaunted and gracious; she brings a high degree of professionalism and polish to any project lucky enough to be within her purview.
Deanne Urmy, editor-at-large, HarperCollins Publishers, and former senior executive editor, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

I have had the rare good fortune to work with Susanna Brougham on fiction and narrative nonfiction manuscripts. She brings her superb ear, her poet’s verbal aptitude, and her fine literary judgment to bear on everything her editorial pen touches, whether it is the overall design of a piece or the architecture of its chapters and paragraphs. On top of that, she is just a pleasure to work with.
– Christopher Knowlton, author of CATTLE KINGDOM (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) and BUBBLE IN THE SUN (Simon & Schuster)

I worked with Susanna Brougham in developing my memoir. She gave extensive feedback about the book’s structure and suggested ways to clarify the case I wanted to make, encouraging me to do this boldly. She also reviewed the manuscript line by line. An excellent editor like Susanna makes all the difference in the polish, and the point, of a book.
– Lyn Brakeman, author of GOD IS NOT A BOY’S NAME (Wipf and Stock)

Susanna Brougham’s manuscript evaluation of my novel’s first draft was extremely well written, thoughtful, and comprehensive. I appreciated her analysis of its strengths and the areas that needed improvement or restructuring. She was patient and encouraging as I revised the first draft. I’ve now come back for a full developmental edit.

– Amanda Cook, vice president and editorial director, Crown / Penguin Random House

Susanna is an extremely talented editor, with a great ability for understanding, respecting, and best rendering an author’s voice. Her editing is deft, delicate, incisive, and refined, and she’s also a pleasure to work with.
